The Material: a panel made from hemp shives

Plant Plast is a panel material made from hemp shives, the woody core of the hemp stalk, developed for design, interiors, furniture and material-led projects. It's a material you see and feel: a matte, living surface, visible natural structure, a calm character that deliberately sets itself apart from smooth industrial panels and from plastic. Plant Plast is made without glues or resins. Samples are available and can be available on request.

A material of its own, not plastic, not a building board

The name is a deliberate contradiction. "Plast" here doesn't stand for plastic but for its opposite: a plant-based material that shows what it's made of instead of hiding it. And Plant Plast is not one of the "hemp boards" sold as drywall or insulation panels, made with clay or mineral binders, built to disappear into the wall. Plant Plast takes the opposite stance: a material for design and making that stays visible and becomes part of the work. If you need an insulation or drywall board, this isn't it. If you want a natural material with its own character for visible surfaces, it is.

How it's made

Hemp grows fast, and processing it leaves the woody core of the stalk behind, the shives. That raw material is what becomes Plant Plast: the shives are formed under pressure into a solid, dimensionally stable panel, made without glues or resins. The exact manufacturing process stays confidential. What matters is the result: a material that doesn't mask its origin but turns it into the surface. What the plant-based origin means for sustainability, a material that doesn't mask its origin but turns it into the surface. What the plant-based origin means for sustainability, you'll find under Sustainability.

Feel

How Plant Plast feels

Material is decided in the room, not on the datasheet. The surface of Plant Plast is matte and warm; you can read the fine structure of the shives and feel a character clearly different from the smooth coolness of industrial panels. For architects, fit-out specialists and designers that's exactly the value: origin, material character and a feel you still notice in the finished project.

Formats and thicknesses

Plant Plast is currently pressed in two panel formats:

  • 6.00 m × 1.25 m
  • 10.00 m × 1.25 m

Available thicknesses: 15 mm, 18 mm and 22 mm.

These are the dimensions available today. Further formats and thicknesses are not yet settled. If your project needs something different, tell us and we will look into it.

Processing

Plant Plast can be worked with standard woodworking machinery. Which processing and which finish make sense for your project we coordinate case by case, so you get the material to suit the application rather than off the shelf.

Evaluate Plant Plast for your project

A material is best judged in the hand. Tell us about your idea or application and we will provide a suitable sample once we have clarified the relevant requirements together. With a sample in hand you can experience the surface and character of the material yourself before you commit.

Plant Plast as an alternative to MDF & chipboard

Looking for a panel material for visible, design-led surfaces, people quickly land on MDF or chipboard. These materials work, but they rarely show character and usually hide behind a décor foil. Plant Plast goes a different way: a plant-based material with a visible natural character and a surface that is part of the design and is not designed to hide it. Whether Plant Plast is the right choice for your application, we're glad to assess together on a sample.

Frequently asked questions

Answered briefly.

No. Plant Plast is neither an insulation product nor a drywall board, but a material for design and visible applications.

No. It is a plant-based material made from hemp shives, without glues or resins.

Conventional hemp boards are sold as drywall/insulation panels with binders (often clay) and disappear into the construction. Plant Plast is geared toward design and visible material character.

Hemp shives, compacted under pressure into solid panels, without glues or resins. The exact manufacturing process is confidential.
